Basia Bulat shares her secrets of the city!

Basia Bulat is no stranger to these parts. So we thought we’d ask the Toronto-based singer/songwriter, who plays Vancouver often, about some of her memories of the city, and playing shows here.

Bulat grew up in Etobicoke, Ontario, and first learned to play music on the autoharp. She released her debut album, Oh My Darling, in 2007; her most recent album, Good Advice, came out last year. In a review, the Guardian called Bulat’s latest “a rich and raw return,” and said that, “compared to her first three albums… her latest feels supercharged.”

Q: Do you have a favourite/least favourite Vancouver show?

A: My favourite is a tie between the last show I did at the Vogue Theatre and the last time I played Vancouver Folk Fest! The Vogue has such a cool stately old vibe to it and the Folk Fest has one of the best views from stage I’ve ever had.

Q: Where is your favourite place to eat in town, or barring that, favourite food?

A: Every time I go to Vancouver I stop by Sushiyama for sushi and maki!

Q: What advice would you give touring musicians who’ve never played Vancouver before (i.e. don’t leave your van unlocked at Main & Hastings).

A: Number one advice is to check out the Lido on Broadway in Mt Pleasant – one of my favourite spots to hang out ever!
